Kurys' largely autobiographical work is a beautiful rendering of the strength and complexity of friendship. Huppert portrays Lena, a reticent housewife resigned to the numbing security of her husband and family. Through a chance encounter, she meets Madeleine (Miou-Miou), a vibrantly bohemian sculptress whose love and companionship open the door to Lena's self-discovery. The film radiates with the delicate nuances of a woman's sensibility and sensuality. (French with English subtitles)
