Featuring a superb evocation of post-WWII New York, director Mazursky has created a career milestone with this darkly comic tale about a Jewish immigrant (Silver), scarred from his wartime experiences, who suddenly finds himself with three wives. An extraordinary cast includes Huston as his strong-willed first wife thought killed in the camps; Stein as his gentile, slave-like second; and the remarkable Olin as a lusty socialist whose passion most ignites the stolid Silver.
