Having paid his dues to Hollywood several times over with Batman, director Burton presents this small-scale gem about a boy with scissors for hands. This heartbreaking and highly original parable on conformity casts Depp as a social misfit who's taken by Wiest to live in her "average suburban household" where he falls in love for the first time, becomes all the rage as a hairdresser to the neighborhood's wives, and learns the high cost for societal conventions. Burton has fashioned in this beautifully filmed and comic fantasy the ultimate tale of the outsider as misunderstood and victimized innocent.
