REVIEW
One of the last silent movies and a masterpiece in Soviet cinema, Earth is a lyrically-told poem to man's love of nature, his endeavors to adapt it to his needs, and of man's death as part of the cycle of life. In Ukraine, a collective of poor peasants attempt to farm the vast lands of the Kulaks, the landed gentry, who in turn oppose them. Dovzhenko paints an indelible portrait of a people's struggle against superstition, rich landowners and nature itself in their fight to make their dreams reality. (Silent with orchestral accompaniment)
