REVIEW
Two outstanding swordsmen from rival schools, one Japanese and one Chinese, are forced to do battle in a traditional tournament which is held once every 100 years. But these are not ordinary swordsmen; they can fly through the air and summon supernatural powers to aid them in combat. Unexpectedly, the two become friends, combining their awesome abilities in an effort to defeat their enemy. This debut film from Hong Kong action director Ching, who also helmed the Chinese Ghost Story, features all the trademark attractions of his later works: gravity-defying swordsmen, chaotic camerawork, themes of loyalty and duty, a bit of humor to lighten the drama and sumptuous visuals. A great introduction to Hong Kong action cinema, but also a forgotten gem sure to please even veteran fans. (Cantonese with English subtitles) Editor's Suggestions
