REVIEW
Set in Liverpool in 1944, this intricate character study subtly probes the complexities of three women. When Rita, a timid, young waif, befriends a randy American soldier who is stationed in town, a bitter struggle for her soul ensues between her two aunts: the fun-loving Margo (beautifully played by Whitelaw) and the disapproving, repressed spinster Nellie (icily portrayed by Plowright). Based on the novel by Beryl Bainbridge, this extremely well-acted and absorbing family drama is taunt with sexual tensions and impending disaster. You Might Also Like
