REVIEW
This delightfully offbeat drama-comedy is a promising feature film debut from writer-director Shum. Set in Vancouver, the story follows Jade Li (Oh), a spunky 22-year-old Chinese-Canadian woman who, when not working for her big break in acting, tries to find romance -- two goals that upset her traditional-minded parents who just want her to find a "nice Chinese man and settle down." Interracial romance blooms when Jade falls for a cutely dorky white guy (Rennie) while her parents (Chang, Ong) desperately try to set her up with a handsome, debonair and Chinese (but gay) lawyer (Mah). The complex family dynamics of an immigrant family clinging to the ways of the old world are wonderfully exposed in this spirited, thoughtful film. Editor's Suggestions
