REVIEW
Poet Federico Garcia Lorca was one of the first victims of Franco's fascist regime, which took power after winning the Spanish Civil War in 1936. The Disappearance of Garcia Lorca follows a journalist who returns to his boyhood home in Spain to uncover the mystery surrounding the death of Lorca, whose writings and homosexuality branded him as a subversive by the government. The cast, including Olmos and Ferrer, is uniformly good, but it is Garcia's stand-out performance as Lorca which elevates the film. Morales portrays Ricardo Gonzales, the journalist who idolized Lorca as a child and who ignores the countless threats in his quest for the truth. Flashbacks -- told Rashomon-like from several conflicting sources -- are confusing at times. Overall, though, the film is compelling and the cinematography is gorgeous.
