REVIEW
"Muckraking bastard journalists" Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein won a Pulitzer Prize for breaking the Watergate scandal, relying heavily on a source named "Deep Throat." But who was this source? According to Dick, it was two 15-year-old girls who were in the wrong place at the right time. This theory is not Oliver Stone's however; as directed by Fleming (The Craft), it is given a light, even cute satirical touch that hits lots of easy targets without saying anything deeper than that these guys were all idiots. Dunst and Williams, making a winning couple, witness the burglary at the hotel and later see paper shredding and even Dick's recording system (on which Williams leaves an 18½-minute love paean to him). They're kind of the Forrest Gumps of Watergate, bumping into amusing cameos by G. Gordon Liddy (Shearer) and Kissinger (Rubinek). Anyone familiar with the scandal will enjoy the references, but the jokes are predictable, until the film thuds to an ending with a labored Dick joke.
