REVIEW
Borrowing quite liberally from just about every popular horror/thriller of the last couple decades, this underwater thriller still manages to entertain in spite of its creaky story, cartoonish effects and one of the most wooden performances from a lead in quite some time. Scientist Burrows is searching for an Alzheimer's cure by toying with shark DNA. Only thing is, her tests have elevated the sharks up the evolutionary scale a notch or two. And now the great whites have flooded the underwater lab the small crew inhabits -- and they're pissed. The production design is actually quite good, but is offset by the less-than-menacing sharks. Spielberg did it better back in the '70s. At least it's fun to watch each member become dinner in a wide variety of attacks. Jackson is his usual commanding self (keep your eyes wide open for his "rallying the troops" speech), though Burrows must have taken acting lessons from Steven Seagal.
