REVIEW
A grim, involving chamber piece based on Ariel Dorfman's stage play, Death and the Maiden stars Weaver as a former brutalized political prisoner. Now living peacefully with her husband (Wilson), whom she had protected, Weaver's seemingly calm exterior is shattered one night when she hears the voice of an acquaintance of her husband -- the man who had tortured her. Thus sets in motion a game of revenge as the man (a marvelously controlled Kingsley), now being held hostage, firmly denies being him and Weaver will do anything to prove that he is. But who is right? Weaver's forceful but one-note portrayal and Polanski's stage-bound direction don't completely undermine an otherwise compelling scenario. Editor's Suggestions
