Choderlos de Laclos's novel "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" has been made into three great movies already; this fourth leads one to believe that it can do no wrong. The exploits of Valmont (Phillippe) and Merteuil (Gellar) are updated to the politically incorrect '90s in Manhattan, and given a terrifically trashy twist by writer-director Kumble. The step-siblings set up a wager for Phillippe to seduce Witherspoon (cast against type as a goody-goody virgin); Merteuil's prize? "I'll fuck your brains out." No pretentiousness here, just catty talk and vile acts -- get out the popcorn! A good-looking flick with a great-looking cast and a slick soundtrack, Cruel Intentions is a fun hoot from start (the ruin of a psychiatrist) to inevitable finish (the slow-motion comeuppance of Merteuil). --David Gorgos
