Lancaster is memorable as a retired intellectual whose life of solitude amid his books, paintings and art is abruptly invaded by the arrival of a garish "modern" family who move in upstairs. His old-world comforts are shattered as he is both drawn to and forced to participate in their tawdry and hedonistic lifestyle. The invading family (which brings a breath of fresh air, life and love into the professor's life) includes the enchanting countess (Mangano), her daughter (Marsani) and the Countess' student revolutionary boy-toy (Berger).
