A clamorous vision of gang warfare in Los Angeles directed by Hopper, with his patented flair for the unusual and bizarre. Duvall and Penn are fine in their roles as L.A. cops, but what really gives the film its edge is the presence of actual gang members whom Hopper cast to play the Bloods and the Crips -- the city's largest rival gangs. Without totally departing from action movie conventions, Colors brims with flavor and detail and features a tremendous soundtrack.
