FROM THE LINER NOTES

The whiplash, double-pronged Chungking Express is one of the defining works of nineties cinema and the film that made Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar-wai an instant icon. Two heartsick Hong Kong cops (Takeshi Kaneshiro and Tony Leung), both jilted by ex-lovers, cross paths at the Midnight Express take-out restaurant stand, where the ethereal pixie waitress Faye (Faye Wong) works. Anything goes in Wong’s gloriously shot and utterly unexpected charmer, which cemented the sex appeal of its gorgeous stars and forever turned canned pineapple and the Mamas and the Papas’ "California Dreamin’" into tokens of romantic longing.

3 REASONS TO BUY THIS FILM

  • "One of the great movies of its decade." – Dan Jardine, Apollo Guide
  • "Tarantino loved this movie so much, indeed, that he signed a deal with Miramax to start his own releasing company" – Roger Ebert
  • "A movie that has Tarantino's brand of kinetic, eccentric energy but that's much more soulful." – Joe Baltake, Sacramento Bee
REVIEW
The stories of two Hong Kong police officers who are dumped by their girlfriends are interwoven in this brilliant, engrossing, yet low-budget pastiche. Made while working in postproduction on his angst-ridden swordsman movie Ashes of Time, Chungking's swift genesis and execution shows. It is vibrant, immediate and exudes a truthfulness and poignancy which can be attributed to its lack of rewrites and production tinkering. Slow motion, jump cuts, pixellated movement and the recurrent use of a handful of pop tunes all combine to make the film very different from its Hong Kong brethren yet set firmly within that diverse genre. There is also at least a kernel of truth for most people in this film about romantic relationships and how we adapt to their beginnings as well as their ends. (Cantonese with English subtitles)
