REVIEW
A superb, Oscar-winning script and consistently outstanding performances are supported by meticulous production values to deliver a classic tale of intrigue, conflicted loyalties, overwhelming greed and the futility of honor in a corrupt world. Nicholson plays Jake Gittes, a Los Angeles private eye called into what at first appears to be a simple case of marital infidelity. Dunaway arrives at his offices to declare that she is the real wife of the man Gittes has been paid to follow, and she has no desire to see her husband tailed. Gittes, with more curiosity than forethought, delves even deeper into the mystery; the governmental malfeasance he uncovers is child's play compared to the murky family secrets lying even deeper below. Especially arresting is Huston's portrayal as Dunaway's father, a man who accepts no limits to his power and position, whether in business or in his homelife. A contemporary American film classic featuring one of Nicholson's best performances. (Sequel: The Two Jakes)

"What happened to your nose, Gittes? Somebody slammed a bedroom window on it?"
"Nope. Your wife got excited. She crossed her legs a little too quick. You understand what I mean, pal?"
