REVIEW
Based on the book "Lytton Strachey" by Michael Holyroyd, Carrington is the story of the relationship and attraction between artist Dora Carrington (Thompson) and gay Bloomsbury Group writer Lytton Strachey (Pryce). Their unconventional but enduring friendship and love story begins when Strachey becomes attracted to what he thinks is a boy. He is embarrassed to find out the "boy" is actually Dora Carrington. A tentative kiss by Strachey does not lead to sexual relations, but Carrington does fall in love with him. They eventually move in together and sleep together and even find themselves attracted to the same men, including Carrington's future husband (Waddington). Bearded, painfully thin and always ready with the satiric quip, Pryce's Strachey is a revelation. Director Hampton has fashioned a fine, sometimes dark period piece complete with lush surroundings, and it is well served by an intelligent screenplay.
