REVIEW
Directed by Preminger (who also directed Porgy and Bess) and scored by Oscar Hammerstein, Bizet's famous opera is transformed into an all-black musical starring Dandridge as a flirtatious party girl who causes soldier Belafonte to go off the deep end because of his passion for her. Laced with many fine performances, this highly entertaining songfest also made Dandridge the first black performer nominated for an Oscar in a leading role. Editor's Suggestions
