REVIEW
A culture of repression and paranoid caution inhabits a small mountain valley community living in stringently enforced guilt, guarding against the threat of avalanche. This alternate world is described by director Maddin (Tales of Gimli Hospital) in saturated colors and stark imagery coupled with kitschy detail, creating a hyperreality of repressed passions; a rigidly organized hotbed of Freudian conflicts where dead fathers try to caution Oedipal sons, and daughters vie for fathers' affections. Visually sumptuous, witty and truly unique, Careful can be described as "David Lynch meets German Expressionism" via dream therapy. It's both stimulating and adventurous.
