Rose follows up his 1988 film Paperhouse, a psychologically astute horror film, with this solid adaptation of goremeister Clive Barker's short story, "The Forbidden." Madsen gives a gutsy performance as a graduate student whose research into contemporary myths and legends summons the vengeful hook-handed spirit of a slave (Todd) who was murdered for daring to love a white woman. In possibly the first horror movie with an interracial love theme, Rose sacrifices cheesy special effects in favor of interesting characterizations and bizarre set designs, making this an enduring horror movie for the art-house set.
