Bye Bye Birdie

It's like an episode of "Dobie Gillis" with songs in this rather benign satire on the foibles of rock 'n' roll. Before reporting for his military service, an Elvis-like character makes a visit to a small Midwestern town. And wouldn't you know it, those darn teenagers just get all silly. Van Dyke repeats his star-making Broadway role, and is helped by pleasant performances from Ann-Margret and Lynde. Enjoyable tunes like "Put on a Happy Face" and "Kids" enliven this ever-so-amusing confection.
