REVIEW
Treacherous waters run deep in this moody thriller. Though not completely successful in its storytelling, Blood & Wine moves at a fast clip; and its characters are always up to something -- part of its noir appeal is figuring what. Nicholson is a Miami wine merchant whose position with the city's wealthier clientel gives him access to their property -- which helps when he and slimy associate Caine decide to empty their safes. When Nicholson's wife Davis decides to leave her husband and unknowingly walks off with a stolen necklace, she and son Dorff become targets of the maniacal Caine with Nicholson stuck in the middle. Rafelson gives the film a good look, and there's a terrific car chase scene, but there's also nothing new to the genre here, and Dorff's romantic involvement and devotion to his stepfather's mistress ( Lopez) is flimsy at best.
