Not since Harold and Maude have two crazies endeared themselves so winningly as Depp and Masterson in Benny & Joon, a hilarious, offbeat charmer. Quinn is Benny, a thoughtful garage mechanic who gallantly looks after his mentally ill sister Joon (Masterson). Into their lives steps Sam (Depp), a Buster Keaton clone whom Benny wins in a card game. Soon, Sam and Joon bring new definition to "crazy in love," forcing an emotional showdown for all three characters. Writer Barry Berman's script works on many levels: as comedy, romantic fable, hip character study, and even homage to the great silent clowns. As Sam, Depp is a marvel: his silent comedy schtick is uncanny, and his soulful eyes and puppy-dog face punctuate an appealing romantic idol. Masterson ably captures the right mixture of waif and firebrand.
