The Belly of an Architect

Dennehy stars as a rotund American architect who travels to Rome with wife Webb to oversee the mounting of a show honoring 18th-century French designer Boulée. As Dennehy becomes more and more obsessed with the project, his life begins to mirror that of the ill-fated Boulée, who died of a mysterious stomach ailment. For Greenaway's part, he's obsessed with Dennehy's portly midsection. The stocky actor puts in what can only be called an immense performance as Greenaway's camera explores his tummy from all angles. While visually stunning, the film is one of Greenaway's less-successful efforts.
