MTV award-winning video director Williams makes an impressive debut with this brutally raw portrait of urban street life. Chart-topping rappers Nas and DMX shine in their starring roles as best friends who soon begin to grow apart as they sink deeper into the dark and dangerous world of drug dealing. With the events unfolding in a dreamlike, trance-inducing style, Belly manages to actually allow the viewer to gain insight into the many characters. Some may be put off by the realistic violence, the negative portrayal of women, and the use of profanity, but these are necessary in making the characters believable.
