Director Schroeder has perfectly captured the spirit of Charles Bukowski's autobiography about the resilience of the creative force. Rourke, in possibly his best performance, plays the alcoholic writer who begins an affair with fellow inebriate Dunaway (remarkable in a non-typecast role); the two enjoying the seedy Los Angeles bar scene in search of libation and unorthodox fulfillment. A brilliant, hilariously funny character study.
