Whaley stars in this Hitchcockian suspenser as an American student abroad who accidentally steps into a web of intrigue involving a stolen religious artifact and Soviet spies. Russian actors Natalya Negoda and Ravil Issayanov, along with Polanski's portrayal of a shrewd and heartless villain, and the fabulous Russian scenery, propel this otherwise average thriller.
