Angel Baby

Two magnificent performances enliven this otherwise ordinary drama about two mental patients in love. For Harry (Lynch), it is love at first sight when he meets Kate (McKenzie), a young woman who receives coded messages from "Wheel of Fortune." When the couple decide to move in together, have a baby, and stop taking their medication, things sour quickly. Director Rymer does achieve some lyrical moments, but all too often the film takes a heavy-handed approach to its sensitive subject matter. Both Lynch and McKenzie handle their big breakdown scenes well, and they look good sans clothing, but ultimately the film exploits their strong performances. In support, Friels is outstanding as Harry's frustrated brother.
