REVIEW
Fellini uses a gentle mixture of dreamlike fantasy and bittersweet cynicism in this autobiographical examination of a small Italian town. Young Zanin (the director's alter ego) hangs out with his friends, gets in trouble, obsesses over women, and attempts to figure out his life. On the surface, the film is a funny and warm coming-of-age story (Fellini's recollection of facing a father confessor as an adolescent boy is alone worth the price of rental). But the specter of Fascism that looms throughout the picture raises complex and challenging questions. One of Fellini's most accessible and compelling films. (Italian with English subtitles)
