Reincarnation, the hereafter, gurus and modern romance are all equally spoofed in director Reiner's splendidly funny romp which offered Martin his first real chance to prove his immense comic abilities. Tomlin costars as a dying, rich invalid whose belief in returning from the dead prompts some hasty legal maneuvering. This sends lawyer Martin to her side. But in a strange turn of events, Tomlin's soul has now been transported into the body of Martin, who only wants her out. As the inspired silliness continues, Martin engages in a battle of cosmic wills with his spiritual houseguest. Though the premise and its execution are engaging, it is really Martin's virtuoso performance which distinguishes the film. Martin literally gets in touch with both his masculine and feminine sides as he fights Tomlin for control of his body, sending him on a hilarious, slapstick search for inner tranquility.
