Review

Let's make a new rule, shall we? If you're going to try your hand at the whole "homemade home invasion/torture and rape" thing, please ensure that you have, at the very least, the basic tools of the trade at your disposal. These tools should include at least one woman willing to take her clothes off and the basic skills to handle a video camera. Defiled, the latest flick in this illustrious genre, finds itself lacking both.

Ok, well that's not exactly fair. Director Zachary Paul, making what we can only assume to be his directorial debut, does coaz star Amanda Myers out of her clothes on at least two occasions. So, technically speaking, he covered the whole "naked chick" stipulation in our new mandate. But damn son, it's almost impressive in a really twisted way how shitty your sound and camera work is.

See, in a movie about a chick obsessed with fulfilling her fantasy of being raped by a home invader only to have that fake invader/rapist turn out to be very real, it would be most helpful if we could see, say, ANYTHING during the fucking rape scene. Here, Paul fails so goddamn miserably we almost felt bad for the guy. The entire rape is lost behind waaaaaay too dark lighting. If you're gonna shoot scenes in the dark, you need either lights or one of them fancy digital cameras that can basically see in the dark. Paul appears to be working with a digital video camera so old and yielding such poor image quality that it should have withered to prehistoric dust by now. Huge stretches of the movie appear blurry or too dakr to see including some of the most important as far as plot/letting us watch a hot chick get violated go.

So what does Defiled do well? Well, to be honest, nothing. Amanda Myers' boobs do look nice in her post-rape waking up nude scene and the villain's Phantom of the Opera-esque mask does lend more than a little unintentional comedy to his ridiculous scenes of pyschological torture/who gives a shit character development. All in all, though, this is for rape/torture completists only.
