Review

A good cast cannot save this self-indulgent, uninvolving and frequently annoying directorial debut by Hawke. Chelsea Walls, adapted by Nicole Burdette and based on her stage play, looks at a collection of aspiring artists, musicians, junkies and oddballs who make up the guests staying at the once-great Chelsea Hotel, which was the homestead for many '60s and '70s icons (Bob Dylan and Lou Reed among them). Unfortunately, the mighty building is now a shadow of its former self, and the current crop of wannabes struggle to find inspiration there, while going through rather dull personal problems. This could've made a decent short -- and does provide some interesting looks at the inside of the hotel -- but at nearly two hours, and with nary a character to really care about, this becomes deadening rather quickly.
